A Bright Idea

You’ve probably noticed how much easier it is to see when you’re driving in the daytime as opposed to at night. It’s one of the main reasons about half of all fatal vehicle accidents happen when it’s dark.

That’s why it’s important that your vehicle’s headlights are in top condition and working the way they should.  That means that they’re aimed correctly and producing the amount of light they are intended to produce.

For many years, headlights were a standardized size and shape.  They were what is called a “sealed beam,” and when you needed to replace one, it was pretty simple.  You just took the old one out and plugged a new one in. 

But now there are hundreds of different types of lighting systems on vehicles, producing light with such illuminating technology as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), halogen bulbs, high-intensity discharge (HID) bulbs and more.  Some vehicles have systems that turn your lights in the direction you turn your steering wheel so you can more clearly see where you are going.

Now that it’s not so simple to change headlamps or bulbs, it’s wise to consult your service advisor.  She or he can tell you what your options are.  There may be ways you can upgrade your lighting with new headlamps or components, but it’s important not to install new parts that could damage your vehicle.  For example, the headlight housing could be damaged if a bulb burns too hot for its design. 

It’s also good to check regulations and laws where you live.  Some regulate the color of light your headlamps can shine and how bright they can be. It’s wise to leave it up to a technician to replace your headlamps.  Some are tricky to get at, and modern engine compartments can be packed so tightly, it’s hard to maneuver around all of the other engine components to reach the headlamp compartment.

Oh, one other thing to keep in mind.  Even if your headlamps are both working, you might notice people are flashing their lights at you, even when you don’t have the high beams on.  That could mean your headlamps are aimed wrong; for the safety of the other drivers and yourself, have your technician check your headlamps’ aim.

You’ll see the light when you have good visibility at night.

Tacky or Techie? The Tachometer.

There’s a gauge that many vehicles have that says RPM on it.  And there are a lot of people who either don’t pay any attention to it or don’t even know what it is. Here’s why it’s a good gauge to know about.

It’s called a tachometer, and that “RPM” label means it is measuring how many revolutions per minute (RPM) the engine is turning.  Automotive experts know that a vehicle’s engine can be damaged if it turns too fast (revving too high) or too slowly (“lugging” the engine).

A tachometer (sometimes called a tach) is almost a “must-have” gauge for vehicles with a manual transmission; the driver has to manually change gears; the tach helps the driver know when revolutions are in the optimal range.

Some say you don’t need a tachometer if you drive a vehicle with an automatic transmission. It’s true that most drivers of automatics don’t even look at it.  But there are times when paying attention to the tach can help you prevent an expensive repair.

Here’s a good example.  Manufacturers now build many of their automatic transmission vehicles with shift paddles.  They let you shift gears without a clutch. That’s manual shifting, and drivers need to know they’re not revving the engine too high. That’s where the tachometer comes in, since it shows you visually when you are in the red zone (RPM too high).

Here’s another way the tach can help you: fuel economy. Generally speaking, the lower the RPM, the better the fuel economy. It’s not good to go too low, of course, and the tachometer will help you find that spot of maximum efficiency.

You can also spot problems by paying attention to the tach.  When your vehicle stays in first gear longer than usual (higher reading on the tach), then the RPM dip lower than usual after shifting, it may be that your vehicle’s transmission is skipping a gear.  Plus, if your vehicle’s RPM go up but your speed doesn’t, it could mean your transmission is slipping.  Either situation should be checked by a trained technician.

If your commute takes you down some long grades, you might like to put your vehicle in a lower gear to help slow down the car (and not burn up the brakes). Having a tachometer keeps tabs on when your engine is revving too high.

So, consider the tachometer a “bonus” gauge.  It’s one more helpful assistant that can help you spot and prevent problems in your vehicle.

Greeted by a Screech (Loud Noise when Starting Vehicle)

No one likes to be greeted in the morning by having someone screech at you.  The same goes for a loud, high-pitched noise your vehicle greets you with every time you start the engine.  If you’re wondering if that’s normal, no, it isn’t.  And it is worth getting checked out.  The good news is that it might be nothing serious.  Then again, it may be.

The first things to suspect any time you hear a high-pitched sound coming from the engine are belts.  They have tension on them and they’re trying to turn lots of different pulleys, pumps and other equipment the engine needs to work properly.  The noise could come from the belts starting to wear out and dry out. If one of those belts breaks at an inopportune time, not only can it strand you somewhere, the damage to the engine could be very expensive to fix.

Other things that will cause a high-pitched sound are the pulleys and tensioners.  The tensioners keep the right amount of pressure on the belts and some pulleys contain rubber that dampens engine vibrations.  The rubber in the pulleys can crack or deform with age, which prevents them from working correctly and may cause your belts to wear out.

A technician will check to see if the belts are worn or cracked.  He or she will also check the tension on the belts, the condition of the pulleys and whether all  components are aligned the way they should be.

Sometimes, the noise is nothing major to worry about, but it’s still worthwhile to rule out any problems that have cropped up now or may appear in the future.  You’ll have a properly running vehicle that sounds like its engineers intended… quiet and smooth.
